A Favorite Thanksgiving weekend, so far...

The Gayla Pink Apple

A Favorite Thanksgiving Weekend,
One I'll Always Remember, Anyway!

If you are like me, most Thanksgivings are pretty much the same.  Turkey and all the traditional side dishes with family, eating too much, and relaxing a little too much afterwards. Eating left-overs until you're miserably stuffed!

Thanksgiving 2007, my daughter spent the day before making homemade chocolate truffles with white chocolate drizzle, and a batch of pumpkin squares for the following day.  On Thanksgiving day, I cooked the traditional meal for the three of us. Beautiful decorations and place settings on the dining table as expected.  It was gorgeous and the food delicious! To our eye and taste buds anyway.

Friday after Thanksgiving is usually up for grabs. Some do the early shopping thing  - get up at dawn and shop for sales, bargains, etc! Not me, I am not into fighting the crowds to get a bargain! Therefore, most years, our Friday after Thanksgiving would either be the beginning of decorating the house for Christmas or spending the day getting out the Christmas music - discussing the fact that Santa Claus would be coming soon - mixed in with some good ole lounging around the house.

But not in 2007 ---  Blair and I had other plans.  This time our Friday after was different.  We got up very early and drove to Chicago.  We had tickets to see the musical Wicked, for the third time, and were planning to shop til we dropped!!  How much better could that be for two girls!!

We've been to Chicago several times before - we would usually fly - we did not normally drive.  Flying to Chicago in November or December is quite unpredictable - you might get there, and then, you might spend most of your time sitting on the runway, or waiting at the gate in the airport.  Big frown on my face. This happened to me too many times before and I wasn't in the mood.

The drive was tedious and long, but the two of us had a wonderful time singing, talking and laughing.  Blair turned the music volume way too loud - I just let her do it and pretended I was her age.  I wasn't about to say "turn down that music!"  How could a young teenager have fun if all her mother said was "turn down that music?"  So, honey, it was hit the road!

In Chicago, we wore our warm winter weather attire and shopped all day Saturday, then went to the musical on Saturday evening.  Blair absolutely loves Wicked and could not see it too many times.  I remember her describing the weekend as a marvelous dance through Thanksgiving and Chicago!  Now, who could ask for more than that!

Having said that, she may have seen it as a dance through Chicago through her eyes, but this gal, saw it a little differently.  Driving for 10 hours and then arriving in Chicago to a zillion inches of snow on the ground and blizzardly cold temperatures - uhhh -  not a dance for me.  The snow plows had pushed the snow to the side of the streets, and the snow banks were literally taller than the top of my car.  Once the car was turned over to the valet parking guys this gal could breathe a little better.  A big sigh of relief, once that was done the car would not have to come out of the parking deck until we were leaving for home.  Everywhere we needed to go was within walking distance of our hotel.  It was time to relax and soak in every moment with my favorite girl!

We had a blast!  Bundled from head to toe with the warmest clothing we owned.  Blair in her big coat, boots, gloves, and warm cap and scarf.  Me - well - I had heels instead of boots!  I did have my big coat, cap and scarf, along with warm gloves.  But, why on earth was I in HEELS!  Seriously, I must have temporarily lost my mind.  But, it is the truth. I quickly got rid of them and regained my common sense replacing them with boots!

The city was decorated for Christmas.  It was beautiful - snow everywhere - holiday season in the air. Shopping Michigan Avenue - the hustle and bustle of people at every corner - it was great. We shopped until our feet were frozen.  It was a lot of fun to shop for Christmas gifts.  We had plenty of room in the car to get them home - no airlines and carry on packages to fret with - so our Christmas shopping list was an easy breeze!  This was the trip of shopping designer stores and upscale shops - particularly those we do not have in LR.  As you can imagine, we were singing gloriously on the way home - gloriously sassy and gloriously broke too!

As we leave the hotel driving and maneuvering our way to the interstate - snow piled so high you can't see anything on either side of the car - except piles of snow - nasty dirty snow.  I am internally a wreck.  Sure enough I turn left at a stop light and all of a sudden I'm meeting traffic head on.  I had turned onto a street going the wrong direction.  In my defense, there was so much snow - only one lane was passable - there was no way to see other cars until you were about to kiss their headlights.  My daughter says to me, "don't panic" and I then realized she had temporarily become the grown up.  I see an alley with just enough open space to quickly turn my car into the tiny space.  My daughter says, "we're fine, don't panic."  Luckily, a man walking down the street came over and guided me backing out of the alley and directed my turn around.  Back on track - all swell - we make it to the interstate and heading for home.

I would not change a thing about the weekend.  Thinking back on it brings a huge smile to my face and joy to my heart.  It was a wonderful weekend with my daughter and the memories - well, we rocked it!  It's one of my favorite Thanksgiving memories of all, so far!

Dancing down memory lane,

Surely, I'm Not the Only One That Does This!

The Gayla Pink Apple

Surely, I'm Not the Only One That Does This!
and
I do a lot!

Do you go to bed at a reasonable time - fall asleep for a couple hours - wake up and can't fall back to sleep?  But, instead of looking at the ceiling for hours hoping your eyes close and drift off to sleep again - I get up and, man oh man, so much is accomplished in those wee hours.

Doing laundry at 2 a.m. is fantastic.  Recently,  I even rearranged dishes in the cabinets. Washed a few tablecloths to use for the upcoming holiday dinners.  Pulled the heavy duty dining table protector pads out from under the sofa in the study.

Most definitely Christmas decorations have been done during wee hours of the morning when the house is silent.  Turn on a little Christmas music - keep the volume very low - just enough that music can be heard  - and a lot gets accomplished.  I can string those lights and wire the ornaments like I know what I'm doing!

But, at five or six a.m. I'm so tired and sleepy my eyes can hardly stay open.  Jump back in bed and snuggle under my comforter.  Heaven - it feels like heaven!  Awake around nine a.m. and feeling guilty for sleeping so late.  No, I don't feel guilty!  Dang, I didn't sleep late.  I've had about six to eight hours of sleep.  I went to bed at 10 p.m. or 11 p.m. - up at one a.m. -  worked for four or five hours and went back to sleep for an additional four or so hours.  So, that's about seven hours of sleep.  Don't call me lazy!  You get as much sleep as I do - maybe even more!

Because I do not work outside my home, I do consider myself lucky that I am able to set my own hours, so to speak.  That's why my facebook work/ employment says I work at being a lady of leisure.  I work leisurely within my own hours.  But I do work - don't think I don't do anything!  I do a lot!  Well, maybe I don't actually do a lot - but I do quite a bit!  Uhhhh, well, I don't think I really do quite a bit - but I do a little.  I certainly do more than nothing!  Who do you think gets all this stuff done around here?  I mean really -  rolling my eyes - with a smile on my face!

Well, I definitely do something!  I'm not sure I can always tell you what I do - but I do something every day!

Doing something right now - blogging,
Going to read the newspaper,
Thinking about a pedicure,
Pondering details of my Thanksgiving meal,
Going Krogering,
Later will cook something to eat,
Whew, a full morning,
Then maybe a nap,

Did I say nap?
Hmmm, maybe that's why I wake up around one a.m!  Oh well, doesn't matter what time of day things get done - because things do get done.  I get sleep too - just not maybe the hours that most people sleep.  Surely, I'm not the only one that does this!

Doing something,
Gayla

Hey there! Time for me to go hide! woof woof

"Hey there!
Time for me to go hide!"

"She is bringing in all that stuff from the garage.
woof woof - that means good food soon.
yay-woof woof-yay!"

It's Beginning to Look
A Lot Like Christmas!
Decorating has begun at my house! Slowly over the next week or so I will attempt to turn my home into an atmosphere for joy, laughter, and celebration of the Christmas season. Boxes and boxes are brought into the house, new strings of lights are bought to replace burned out ones, and the household begins to transform.
Garlands galore with lights and decorations adorning doorways and thousands of lights placed strategically on the Christmas tree.

Decorating is done in a methodical and planned manner.   Decorations are stored in big plastic storage containers, labeled with contents inside, and a description. There are 12 - 15 large containers stacked in the garage.    Inside are garlands, ribbons, lights, and decorations waiting to jump out, dust themselves off,  proudly hang and shine brightly for the festive days ahead.  The boxes are brought inside one by one and emptied as garlands are hung, decorated, finished and the container returned to the garage so the next container can be brought in.  Every garland starts to wake up and glow, adorned with lights woven into the hanging garlands -  ribbon and ornaments added and WOW!   It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

The tree!  There are two Christmas trees - a green tree and a green tree with a dust of white snow  - we alternate between the two each year.   This year will be the snow tree - we think it is beautiful and it makes the house Christmas.  Literally thousands of lights go on the tree.  At least 2,000 - 2,500 lights shining gloriously!  This may not seem like a lot of lights to you, but it is only a 6.5 ft. tree, not 12 or 14 ft. tall.  So, for the size of the tree - it's a lot of lights.  They are not just thrown on the tree - no sir - they are strategically placed weaving deep inside the depth of the tree and wrapped around each tree limb / branch.

Decorating the tree can take hours and hours - sometimes a couple of days.  I work a while, then rest a while, and repeat.  One full day is usually dedicated to lights and a couple full days dedicated to placing every single ornament, one by one, on the tree.  Literally hundreds of ornaments are wired onto the tree to prevent from accidentally being knocked off by a pet, guest, child, or myself!

Decorating my home during the holiday season is a joy -  I love for family and friends to visit while the house is decorated.  A lot of work, time, and love are put into doing it, and the hope is to bring joy to all for a wonderful festive spirit and Christmas season.

Busy week ahead for this lady,
Starting to Shine Brightly,
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas,
Gayla

I Like It- It's the Perfect One

The Gayla Pink Apple

********************************************
Oh - I Like It
It's Perfect, I Think

I am always looking for the perfect one.  I've been looking for the perfect one for twenty years.  Sounds familiar for a lot of things, doesn't it?

I ponder and ask myself, over and over, is it going to work? - always buy it telling myself, yes!   Now this ONE really is perfect - it will be great - look, it has a pocket for my cell phone - a zipper for my lipstick , mints, and gum - and, oh look, even a place for my sunglasses, and plenty of room for my regular stuff - plus that item I need to stick in every now and then.  It's perfect.  It's stylish and expensive looking, right!  Oh, I love it.  I'm going to get it.  Don't you think I should buy it?

I'm referring to the perfect PURSE / HANDBAG!
Seriously, I have been looking for the perfect handbag for twenty years! I always think I've found it every time I buy a handbag. Now,
handbags are not cheap, I don't buy inexpensive handbags, so it is critical the bag is perfect!  It is an investment, and I can't keep investing over and over in the same thing. Too bad you can't trade in a handbag after you've carried it a while and it's no longer perfect.  I'd like to trade in my previously owned handbag, please - sort of like a previously owned car.

Yeah, yeah, I can sell it in a garage sale or on ebay, but that's not the same.   That takes a lot of time.  Taking pictures, posting it on ebay, sitting up an account, deciding how much to ask, figuring out how to ship it and how much to charge for the shipping, then there's pay pal.  That is just way too much for me to mess with.  I'm talking about a trade in - a place to go trade in one handbag for a newer better model.  Hmmmmm, maybe I could lease a handbag.  Oh, I need to look into that!  Kidding!

Well, no, that's not me.  I'm too attached to my handbags to lease.  I don't think I would be able to turn her back in after I've had her for a while.  I mean, I really loved her.  I remember when I bought her.  I thought she was the prettiest thing in the world.  I have to keep her.  I just can't sell her or get rid of her.  I'm attached to her.  So, in the top of the closet she sits - very proudly too!

You might not attach to your things, but I do. Whether she is perfect or not - I loved her when I bought her and I still love her - but she just needs to scoot over and share me with others. Others need to ride my back, sit on my shoulder and / or hang on my arm.

So, I'll just keep searching for the perfect one.  In the meantime, the one I have now is perfect - until I run across one which speaks to me and convinces me she is even more perfect.

She's perfect, for now!
